Note

Sources (namely Barbara Clowes!) say that William James and Ann Gregory never married. They both appear on the 1881 census when Ann gave her name as James. However, in the following census of 1891, the only person by the name of Walter James (the son of William and Ann) I can find, has a mother named Victoria James. She, coincidentally or not, was born at the same time and in the same place as Ann Gregory, leading me to believe that Ann Gregory/James and Victoria James are one and the same person. This fact is also endorsed by the fact that Victoria's newphew, John Grainger, who was visiting at the time of the 1891 census, has parents named Mathias Grainger and Ellen Grainger nee Gregory.
I have yet to obtain any birth and death details - this one is quite an enigma!
