I have been researching my Romany traveller family history for some 20 years.
My Romany family names include James, Gregory, and Lee among others.
William James, my second great grandfather, was “married” to Dianah Gregory (a.k.a. Victoria/Diana Victoria); information about Dianah can be found on the ‘Dianah’s story’ page.
The children of William and Dianah took the surname of James, but as William and Dianah were never married, they should have taken the Gregory name, myself included.
The James’s settled at Hillside, School Hill, Little Sandhurst, sometime between 1891 and 1901, on land that was allegedly won in a card game. I believe the first house was built by my great grandfather, Walter, and named ‘Primrose Cottage’. A second, larger property was built in the 1960s by my grandfather, Jesse, and his brother, Walter (Wally). Jesse and his wife, Barbara, lived here until his death in 1970, when my family moved in. The property was sold in 1974 and both properties are still inhabited today.
Also included in these pages, are details of my other family, the Clowes’s of Cheshire, the Morgans of Dublin, Ireland, and the Robinsons of Lancashire.
Additionally, there is information of my step-family – the Martins and Crawfords of Ireland, the Outhwaites of Yorkshire, and the Lees of Northumberland.
Further, there is material relating to my husband’s family – the Russells of East London, the Gatesons of Cambridge, the Jones’s of Gloucestershire and the Jenkins of Somerset.
Information included in these pages include census, births, baptisms, marriages and deaths and many others. PLEASE browse the information from the 'NAMES' link in the menu.
