INQUEST ON AND INFANT - an inquest was held on Monday at Devonshire Cottage, Sandhurst, before Mr. W. Weedon, coroner, on the body of Laura Sybil Vane Wigg. Evidence was give by Jane Benham Wigg, who said she was mother of the deceased child. She was unmarried and a dress-maker. The child was born on January 28th, and a week later was put out to nurse with Mrs. James by witness at the rate of 4s per week. She had already paid nearly £1 for the child, and had frequently seen it while with Mrs. James. The child seemed healthy and well cared for. Further evidence was given by Mrs. James, who said she was the wife of Job James, stoker at the gas house, Blackwater. She had had the care of and nursed the infant from seven days old , at the rate of £2 4s. 6d. The child seemed healthy enough, but twitched a good deal. On Saturday night the child went to bed with her at 11.30, and was alive at 12; but about 6.30 next morning the child was found to be dying. Dr. Russell, who saw the child after death, was of the opinion she had died from suffocation. He knew the last witness, and had no reason to think she had neglected the child. A verdict of "Found dead in bed accidentally suffocated" was returned.
