WOKINGHAM COUNTY BENCH
CARRIAGE LICENSE - Elijah James, of Sandhurst, was summoned for keeping a carriage without a license, at Sandhurst, on June 5.
The defendant was represented by his wife.
P.c. Dance said he saw the defendant using a four-wheel cab on the 5th of June. He had seen the cab on the defendant's premises several times.
Defendant's wife stated that her husband took out a license on the 14th of June. They had applied for a license before that time, but could not get one.
Mr Dawson, supervisor, of Reading (who prosecuted on behalf of the Excise), stated that the license was at the lower rate, and defendant ought to have taken it out for a carriage of over 4 cwt , the price being £2 2s.
The Bench fined the defendant £3, and 11s. 6d. costs; a fortnight was allowed for payment.
