At the time of the 1939 register, Bessie and William lived at 4 Gibletts Folly, Little Sandhurst. Bessie worked as a laundry maid and William was a general labourer.

Living with Bessie and William were two girls Betty E Forster (Rance) and Winifred H Gooding (Rance) born 1929 and 1932 respectively. Both girls were 'at school'. Given their ages and names, I can only assume that they had been adopted by Bessie and William.
